Custom Sessions vs. Mini Sessions

Mar 9, 2023

Hello, lovely people! Have you ever wondered if you should book a mini session or a custom session? I get asked that a lot, so Let’s talk about the differences between mini sessions and custom sessions.

There is a time and place for each, and I hope this post helps you make the best decision for your needs and preferences.

Mini Sessions

These are shorter sessions that are perfect for those who want some high-quality photos at an affordable price. Mini sessions are a quick 10-15 minutes, and I'll choose a specific date and location for the session.

Mini sessions are great for those with busy schedules who may not be able to commit to a longer session. When you just need a few pictures, they can be a great option.

However, it's important to note that there are some limitations to mini sessions. Because they are so short, I can’t get every pose or grouping out there. If it’s a family session, for instance, I aim to capture one family pose, one sibling pose, one individual of each child and one of the parents. Additionally, because I am likely to be shooting with other clients on the same day, I don’t have time to talk and get to know you like we do during a longer session.

Custom Sessions

These are longer sessions that typically last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours. They are a more customized and varied experience, and they allow us to work together to create a session that is tailored specifically to your needs and preferences. However, custom sessions do require a higher investment of both time and money.

If the logistics work out, more than one location is possible. If you have a location that’s meaningful to you, we can shoot your session there. I’ve done a senior session at the family’s own backyard greenhouse, pictures at a baseball field for the baseball fanatic, and shot at a family’s favorite nature preserve/park. Or a lifestyle session in your home has the added benefit of keeping kids in their own environment.

You will be able to wear more than one outfit, if you’d like. We can work together ahead of time to plan the details of your shoot. I can help you decide which outfit to wear first, for instance, based on the route we will be taking and the backgrounds we will be using.

A custom session is more relaxed and there’s more time to get to know each other, relax in front of the camera, and get more candid photos. This means that you'll end up with a wide variety of shots to choose from, which is perfect if you're looking to create a photo album or decorate your home with some beautiful prints.

So, which one should you choose? It really depends on your individual needs and preferences.

I hope this helps answer your questions about which session type is right for you. As always, I'm here to answer any questions you may have. Let's create some beautiful photos together!
