One of the questions I get most often is "where should we shoot?" And honestly, it's one of my favorite things to figure out together — because Grand Rapids and the surrounding area have more good options than most people realize.
Here's a rundown of the locations I find myself coming back to again and again, and what makes each one work.
Downtown Grand Rapids
Downtown is incredibly versatile. You've got historic brick buildings, glass-and-steel architecture, murals, alleys, the river — it can look completely different depending on where you point the camera and what you're wearing. More polished, put-together looks tend to work better here than something very casual. It's also one of the few places that photographs well at multiple times of day.
Eastown
Eastown has a totally different energy than downtown — more relaxed, more color, more personality. The streets have a mix of murals, small storefronts, and architectural detail that makes for interesting backdrops without feeling too formal. Great for seniors who have a more creative or laid-back vibe.
The Blue Bridge
The Blue Bridge gives you the Grand River and the city skyline in the same frame. It's a classic for a reason. The light in the evening here is really good, and you can shoot in multiple directions depending on what you want behind you.
Grand Ravines
This is one I keep coming back to. There's a picturesque covered bridge, a suspension bridge, and a historic red barn — all within a short walk of each other. It gives you a lot of variety without covering a lot of ground, which is useful when you want different looks in a single session. Beautiful in all seasons.
Blandford Nature Center
Blandford is stunning in late spring and fall especially. Wildflowers, tall grasses, wooded paths — it has that natural, organic feel that works really well for seniors or families who want something that doesn't look "city." The light filters through the trees beautifully in the late afternoon.
Provin Trails
Towering white pine forest, sandy paths, a real sense of depth and scale. If you want photos that feel a little more dramatic and dimensional, Provin delivers that. The light behaves differently here than in open fields — more dappled, more texture.
Aquinas College
Aquinas has beautiful historic architecture, manicured grounds, and a reflection pond — and it photographs more like a New England campus than a Michigan college. Great option for seniors who want something a little more elevated without going fully urban.
Calvin University
Calvin has a good mix of brick architecture and natural spaces — including a stone bridge — that works well for a variety of looks. If you want both architectural and natural elements without driving to multiple locations, it's efficient.
Downtown Ada
Downtown Ada has a small-town charm that's hard to manufacture anywhere else — brick storefronts, tree-lined streets, and a relaxed feel that works really well for seniors and families who want something with warmth and character rather than something slick. And just a short walk away is the Ada Covered Bridge, with the Thornapple River running alongside it, if you want to work that into the session too.
Lake Michigan Beaches
Holland, Grand Haven, Saugatuck — they're worth the drive. The light at the beach in the evening is some of the best light you'll ever have to work with. For a summer or early fall session, it's hard to beat. Wide open space, gorgeous color, and that particular softness you only get near the water.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
Location and outfit should work together — a formal look in the middle of a wildflower field can feel a little off, just like super casual clothes in front of a grand building. When we do our pre-session chat, we'll go through this so nothing feels mismatched.
I know all of these spots well, including the best times of day, where the light hits, and how to move through them efficiently. If you have a vision for what you want your session to feel like, I can usually point you toward the right place.
