Grand Rapids Newborn Photography

The first weeks go by in a blur. A newborn session preserves every tiny detail before the newness fades.

About Newborn Sessions

Tiny Details Worth Remembering

The way they smell. The way they curl. The impossibly tiny fingers wrapped around yours. It's all gone before you're ready — and that's exactly why I come to you.

Newborn sessions are best scheduled between 3 and 8 weeks old — that's the sweet spot when babies are still small and sleepy enough to curl up, but settled enough that the early fog has lifted a little for everyone. I come to your home so you don't have to go anywhere.

Sessions include family groupings and sibling poses as well as individual baby shots. Have a few outfits ready for baby — I'll handle everything else.

Book Before Baby Arrives

Reach out during pregnancy and we'll pick a date in that 3–8 week window. The window is wide enough that it works out just fine — no stress.

Newborn Session Questions

When is the best age for newborn photos?

Somewhere between 3 and 8 weeks old is the sweet spot. Earlier than that and the newness of everything is still a lot to navigate. Later and babies are more alert and less inclined to curl up and settle. Reaching out during your third trimester gives us the most flexibility to land on a good date once baby arrives.

Do you come to our home for newborn sessions?

Yes, newborn sessions are in-home. You don't need to pack a bag or strap a newborn into a car seat. I come to you and work wherever the light is good. Every house is a little different and we figure it out when I get there, though it's typically the nursery, master bedroom, and family room.

How long does a newborn photography session take?

Plan for 1 to 2 hours. That's enough time for baby solo shots, family groupings, and sibling moments, with room for a feeding or a fussy stretch in the middle.

What if my baby is fussy during the session?

Completely normal and completely okay. I've been in a lot of homes with a lot of newborns, and I have a few settling tricks I can try. Some sessions are smooth from start to finish, some have a fussy stretch in the middle. Both kinds produce beautiful images.

Can siblings be included?

Absolutely, and sibling shots are some of my favorites. We work them in based on how baby and the older kid are doing throughout the session. It's flexible, and it usually comes together better than you'd expect.

What if baby arrives early or late?

Not a problem. Once baby arrives, reach out and we'll find a date in that window that works. If something needs to shift, we figure it out together.

Do you do posed or wrapped newborn photos, or is it more lifestyle?

Mostly lifestyle. I'm not setting baby up in a basket or posing them on a beanbag. It's more about capturing your family naturally in your own space. That said, swaddling happens a lot, and some soft wrapping is part of how we settle a fussy baby mid-session.
