The most common question I hear from senior families isn't "what should she wear?" or "where should we shoot?" It's "when should we book?" And the most common mistake is waiting too long.
Here's a realistic breakdown of how the calendar works for senior portraits in West Michigan — so you can plan ahead and actually get the date you want.
The Timeline Most Families Don't Realize
Most seniors want their portraits done in time for announcements, which typically go out in the winter of senior year. Working backward from that deadline, here's what the timeline looks like:
- Announcements mailed: January–February of senior year
- Portraits delivered: 3–4 weeks before you need them
- Session takes place: At least a month before delivery deadline
- Session booked: As early as possible — especially for fall dates
That puts the ideal shoot window for most seniors somewhere between late spring of junior year through early fall of senior year — with the most popular dates filling up fast once summer hits.
The Best Seasons for Senior Portraits in Grand Rapids
Late Spring (May–June)
Everything is green, the light is beautiful in the evenings, and you beat the summer rush. This is a great option for juniors who want to get ahead of things. Wildflowers, fresh leaves, and warm golden-hour light make for stunning images. The downside: spring weather in Michigan can be unpredictable, so you may need a backup date.
Summer (July–August)
Summer is busy — for families, for me, and for every senior in the Grand Rapids area. July and August book fast. The upside: long days mean flexible scheduling, and the light in late July and August is gorgeous. Beaches, parks, and downtown locations all look their best. The downside is heat and humidity — we'll work around it, but something to know going in. Reach out early if summer is your window.
Early Fall (September–October)
This is the sweet spot for a lot of seniors. The light gets softer, the colors get richer, and Michigan fall foliage is genuinely one of the best backdrops you can ask for. September and October are high-demand months — if fall is your target, reaching out by May gives you the best pick of dates, though later availability does come up.
Late Fall & Winter
Fewer seniors choose this window, which means availability is better and the look is genuinely uncommon. Bare trees and overcast Michigan skies have a moodiness that's hard to replicate in other seasons — and if you get fresh snow, the images can be stunning. The catch is school yearbook deadlines: many schools want photos submitted in the fall, so a winter session may be too late for that. If yearbook isn't a concern, it's worth considering. Just plan to dress for it.
What About School Picture Day?
School-taken senior portraits are usually earlier in the fall — and they're a separate thing from a full session with me. Plenty of seniors do both: the school portrait for the yearbook, and an outside session for announcements, walls, and everything else.
When Should YOU Book?
My honest answer: as soon as you know you want portraits done. The families who get their first-choice date are always the ones who reached out early — sometimes 4–6 months in advance for popular fall windows.
If you're a rising senior reading this in spring, now is a great time to reach out. If you're a parent whose kid just started senior year, don't wait until October — spots fill faster than people expect.
Ready to Hold Your Date?
Reach out and I'll let you know what's available. I'd rather help you plan ahead than tell you I'm booked.
